NCAA To Stop Putting Name, Logo On EA Video Game

NEW YORK (AP) - Hang on to NCAA Football 14, video game fans. It will be a collector?s edition.

The NCAA said it will no longer allow Electronic Arts Inc. to use its logo starting next year. The move ends a lucrative business deal with the gaming industry giant and comes as the NCAA fights a high-profile lawsuit that says the governing body owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used for free.

The NCAA said it won?t seek a new contract with EA Sports, which manufactures the popular game, beyond the current one that expires in June 2014. However, that won?t stop EA Sports from producing a college football video game depicting powerhouse schools like Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon, and the Redwood City, Calif.-based company made that clear Wednesday.

?EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks,? said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president. ?Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Co. is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, conferences and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports.?

The company reported $3.8 billion in net revenue during its last fiscal year and, aside from its NCAA Football franchise, is well known for Madden NFL, FIFA Soccer and other games.

EA Sports first began making an NCAA Football game in 1998 and it has generated more than $1.3 billion in sales in the U.S. alone, according to a spokesman for market tracking firm The NPD Group Inc. It wasn?t known how much of what EA makes from NCAA Football goes back to the NCAA and its members in licensing deals.

Todd Mitchell, senior analyst with New York-based Brean Capital LLC, said losing the NCAA brand isn?t likely to hurt EA Sports. He estimated NCAA Football accounts for only about 5 percent of EA Sports? revenue, or about $125 million.

?It?s nice to have the brand, but it?s more about the characters,? he said.

Analyst Colin Sebastian of R.W. Baird said EA Sports likely expected to lose its partnership with the NCAA.

?I?m sure they have thought about this because of this pending litigation and the worst case scenarios,? Sebastian said by telephone from San Francisco. ?I don?t expect it to have a significant impact on their business.?

NCAA Football allows participants to play as any major college football team, though unlike in its professional sports games, the names of players are not used. The similarities between the avatars in the game and actual college athletes are at the root of a fight that could alter the way the NCAA does business in the future.

The NCAA is in the midst of a long court battle that started with a lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O?Bannon after he was shown a video game with an avatar playing for the Bruins that played a lot like him.

The antitrust lawsuit also names EA and the Collegiate Licensing Co. that handles trademark licensing for dozens of schools, the NCAA and various conferences. The suit has expanded to include several former athletes who claim the NCAA and EA Sports used their names and likenesses without compensation and demand the NCAA find a way to give players a cut of the billions of dollars earned from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales and video games.

?We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games,? the NCAA said. ?But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.

?The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images or likenesses to EA. The NCAA has no involvement in licenses between EA and former student-athletes,? it said in a statement.

Still, the NCAA said its members can seek arrangements with video game manufacturers if they wish.

?Member colleges and universities license their own trademarks and other intellectual property for the video game,? the NCAA said. ?They will have to independently decide whether to continue those business arrangements in the future.?

Michael Hausfeld, the lead attorney on the O?Bannon case, said the NCAA cutting ties with EA could provide greater freedom for EA to make deals with conferences, schools and even players.

?No longer would EA have to pretend the avatars are not the likenesses of the real players,? he said.

Vice President woos IFAD

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has appealed to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to increase its assistance to rural communities to create other forms of employment to absorb labour released from farming.

He commended the activities of the United Nations Agencies in Ghana, for their support to the economy but also observed that the absence of other more agri-business activities apart from farming had made many a youth swarmed in the cities for non-existent jobs.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur made the appeal when Dr Felix Kanayo Nwanze, the recently re-elected President of the Rome-based organization, led a delegation to call on him at the Flagstaff House, at Kanda, in Accra.

The IFAD President is in Accra to attend the Sixth Africa Agricultural Science Week and the Forum for Agriculture in Africa, which is taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur mentioned among other things the need for guaranteed markets for farmers as an encouragement.

He reiterated Government?s support to farmers for enough productivity and commended the IFAD for teaming up with Government to support a number of projects.

Dr Nwanze gave a plus to Ghana as an important model for IFAD?s progammes and expressed appreciation to the Government and People of Ghana, for giving out a building in Accra to house the IFAD and the Food Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

He said Ghana had been pivotal in translating some of its programmes into reality, adding that the IFAD had 16 projects in Ghana, including rural financing.

Dr Nwanze asked the African political leadership to create the enabling environment for the growth of the small grower, and encourage the development of rural cities with basic social infrastructure like reliable water supply, good roads and electricity.

He said they must also assist the small grower to have markets, in addition to the provision of subsidies for more outputs. Mr Clement Humado, Ghana?s Food and Agricultural Minister, announced that Government had a very high commitment to the development of agriculture, but gradually exiting from subsidies.

Dell buyout vote delay would not lead to higher offer: sources

(Reuters) - Dell Inc Chief Executive Michael Dell and his private equity partner Silver Lake would decline to raise their $24.4 billion bid for the world's No. 3 PC maker even if a vote on their offer is delayed, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Dell may decide to delay a shareholder vote scheduled for Thursday, July 18, on the offer as the company's special board committee now sees the outcome as too close to call, a person familiar with the matter said earlier on Tuesday.

With a nearly 16 percent stake in Dell and ties going back three decades to the creation of the company out of his college dorm room, Michael Dell is seen as having much more at stake in the deal going through than Silver Lake, a financial investor that often walks away from deals it deems to make no sense.

But the two people with knowledge of Michael Dell's and Silver Lake's plans said on Tuesday that any decision to increase the offer would be taken jointly and that both parties have decided there will not be any bump in their $13.65 per share offer.

The people asked not to be identified because their deliberations are private. Spokespeople for Dell and its special board committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Silver Lake declined to comment.

Tesla CTO hopes to reduce EV charging times to 10 minutes or less

Tesla CTO expects to cut EV charging down to 10 minutes or less

Charging time is the bane of every EV driver; even the half-hour for a partial fuel-up at a Tesla Supercharger station can feel like an eternity next to the few minutes required for gasoline. Tesla CTO JB Straubel sees this as just a temporary obstacle, however -- he tells MIT Technology Review that his company could shrink recharge times to between "five to 10 minutes." The primary challenge is optimizing the charger's delivery rates to avoid cooking the battery, he says. While this won't happen overnight, Straubel reminds us that today's Superchargers seemed far-fetched a decade ago. We may not need those battery swapping stations for very long.

China's economy slows for second straight quarter, testing reforms

A Chinese man rides a delivery bike past a propaganda bill board with the words "China, Forward!" in Beijing, China, Monday, July 15, 2013.

China's economic growth in the second quarter of the year may not have slowed as much as some had feared, but a large degree of uncertainty about the outlook for the world's second biggest economy remains, strategists say.

Data on Monday showed the Chinese economy grew 7.5 percent year on year in the June quarter, in line with expectations, but down from 7.7 percent in first three months of the year to mark the second straight quarter of slowing growth.

"Who knows if 7.5 percent [growth] is sustainable? It really is a question of watching the data and where it stabilizes is what's important for the market," Simon Warner, head of macro markets at AMP Capital, told CNBC Asia's "Cash Flow."

(Read More: Just how low will China allow growth to go?)

"We have a real situation in China where nobody really knows where Chinese growth is going to settle down in the coming quarters," he added.

The China gross domestic product (GDP) data bought some relief to markets, which had braced for a weaker-than-forecast number after recent data sparked fears of a sharp slowdown in growth.

Asian stock markets were a touch firmer after the GDP release, while the China-data sensitive Australian dollar hit a session high of about $0.9109.

(Read More: Why aren't markets rallying over China's GDP?)

In a statement, the China statistics bureau said economic performance in the first half was stable, with economic indicators within a reasonable range.

New Premier Li Keqiang has been prominent in pushing for economic reform over fast-line growth, suggesting the government is in no rush to offer fresh stimulus to revive an economy in a protracted slowdown.

With the latest GDP data, China's growth has slowed down in nine of the last 10 quarters.

The government's official growth target for 2013 is 7.5 percent, impressive by world standards but it would be the slowest pace in 23 years for China.

The main worry for China's leaders is if the economic slowdown leads to high unemployment that could spark social unrest. So far government officials say employment is stable.

So for now, economists do not see any major stimulus or policy shift and instead expect the government to tough out the slowdown as they pursue a longer-term vision of reforming the economy towards consumer-led, rather than export- and investment-led growth.

China's full-year growth was 7.8 percent in 2012 and the government targets growth of 7.5 percent for 2013, which would be the slowest in 23 years, according to Reuters.

Analysts at Nomura said that while they maintained their 2013 GDP forecast of 7.5 percent, they had lowered their 2014 forecast to 6.9 percent from 7.5 percent after Monday's GDP report ? partly on an expectation that China's government would lower its official growth forecast for next year.

"In the U.S. we can't predict what's going to happen in three months' time and here we have folks saying growth will be 7.5 percent," said Bill Smead, CEO at Smead Capital Management. "And that's fantastic but I'd like to take them [policymakers] into some other arena so I could make some money out of their ability to predict things so exactly."

Last week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted slowing Chinese growth as one of the three main threats to global economic growth.
