Intel, Microsoft, Oracle Defend Apple as iPhone 4 Ban Looms

Some of the biggest names in technology are coming to Apple's aid as it faces a ban by the International Trade Commission (ITC) of the iPhone 4. Intel, Microsoft and Oracle are now coming to Apple's defense, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, BSA ? a trade group that represents the three companies ? has joined Apple in asking President Obama to stop the ban, which takes effect Aug. 4. The group says that the use of essential industry patents to ban products shouldn't be allowed except under unusual circumstances.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless have also expressed similar concerns.

In June, the ITC ruled that the AT&T versions of Apple's iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G all infringed on patents owned by Samsung. Of the three devices, the iPhone 4 is the only handset that remains on sale around the world.

The Verizon iPhone 4 is not included in the ban.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman is said to be conducting a careful and balanced review process of the ITC decision as established by law and with equal opportunity to consider all perspectives related to the case.

A U.S. president has not intervened in an ITC ban since President Reagan in 1987.

AirAsia Japan cancels hundreds of flights in September, October

TOKYO: AirAsia Japan has said the budget carrier will cancel hundreds of flights over two months before it ceases operations under the current brand at the end of October.

AirAsia Japan, operated jointly by Malaysia-based AirAsia and major Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA), will suspend 14 daily flights from September 1 to October 26, according to a company statement.

The carrier said the cancellations, which will reportedly affect 14,000 passengers, was because of a lack of planes to service all its routes.

The affected routes include flights linking Seoul to the central Japanese city of Nagoya and Tokyo to the northern city of Sapporo.

The carrier will cease operations by the end of October, just over a year after it started flying out of Tokyo's Narita airport in August.

Announcing the dissolution of AirAsia Japan in June, the Malaysian carrier cited a "fundamental difference of opinion between its shareholders on how the business should be managed, from cost management to where the domestic business operations should be based".

ANA however said the venture dissolved because it was not well known in Japan and could not register profits.

The Japanese carrier plans to launch a new budget brand in November.

Va. diocese: Woman who worked for Catholic church near DC among Spain train crash victims

Catholic church officials say an employee of a diocese outside Washington, D.C., was among the 80 people who died in the Spain trash crash this week.

The Diocese of Arlington says on its Facebook page that Ana Maria Cordoba, an administrative employee from northern Virginia, died in the wreck.

Catholic News Service, a division of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, reports that Cordoba, a benefits specialist, was traveling with her husband, Philippe, and her daughter, Christina, a rising high school senior in Arlington.

CNS reports that Philippe and Christina Cordoba were in stable condition at a hospital.

Family members were on their way to see the Cordobas' son, who had completed a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Messages left for the diocese late Thursday were not immediately returned.

The California Prison Strike: Day Sixteen

The California prison strike is entering its third week?here's a brief overview of the strike's history and the strikers' five, not very demanding demands?with reports of retaliation against prisoners who are refusing to eat.

Cold air is allegedly being piped into cells, a prominent rights lawyer has been barred from meeting any prisoners in the state of California, and the New Yorker reports that prison officials are contemplating force-feeding and trying to tempt prisoners with "special menu items":

C.D.C.R. has not ruled out the possibility of force-feeding participating inmates; or perhaps, as in the past, it will try to entice them away from mass resistance with special menu items like strawberry short cake and ice cream. ?They have never had ice cream in the SHU,? the wife of an inmate told the group Prison Hunger Strike Solidarity during a similar hunger strike in 2011. ?And in the nearly twenty years he has been in the California system, he has never seen a strawberry.?

It seems especially cruel to say Yeah, we could've gotten you a strawberry some time in the past 20 years, but we waited until now to place an order.

Some prison officials are telling reporters that the success of the strike?that is, how a bunch of people in solitary with extraordinarily limited and heavily surveilled communication managed to coordinate and organize themselves?is proof that the strikers are gang members. Strikers, on the other hand, claim prison officials are too arbitrary when it comes to deciding who's in a gang, who should be in solitary, and for how long.

Amnesty International has called on prison guards and officials to stop "punishing" the strikers. Prison officials have agreed to meet with some prisoner advocates today in Sacramento.

I'm not expecting much?officials are alternately dismissive of the strike, then heavy on the we-don't-negotiate-with-terrorists rhetoric?but we'll see.

Detroit bankruptcy: The war shifts to the courts

State officials say they hope that Detroit will emerge from bankruptcy by September 2014, but labor unions and bondholders are gearing up for what is more likely to be a prolonged legal battle.

Detroit's filing of a petition for Chapter 9 bankruptcy on Thursday marks just a skirmish in what is expected to be a prolonged legal battle between labor unions, bondholders, and state officials over the future of a city that once symbolized the nation's industrial might.

At issue is the fate of $5.7 billion in unfunded retiree health insurance and $3.5 billion in unfunded pension payouts for some 30,000 retirees and current city workers. Under federal bankruptcy law, contracts regarding the city's obligations to these pensions can be severed. But labor unions, arguing that Michigan's Constitution prohibits the diminishing of accrued public pension obligations, vow to keep up the fight in court.?

Last week, George Orzech, chairman of the Police and Fire Retirement System, summed up his side?s stance toward the evolving legal conflict: ?Welcome to war.?

The moment Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, a county judge filed an injunction to throw it out of court.?

State officials say pension and retiree health benefits will be paid at least through the end of the year, adding that they hope Detroit will emerge from bankruptcy by September 2014. The state and labor unions are disputing exactly how much the different pension funds are underfunded, but emergency manager Kevyn Orr told Fox News Sunday that bankruptcy is?the ?only way? to get Detroit's liability costs under control so the city is not ultimately swallowed deeper into a financial hole.

?All we?re talking about in this restructuring is the unfunded component of those pension funds,? Mr. Orr said. ?There are going to have to be concessions. Concessions may be different for each fund. And they?re going to be focused on the unfunded component.?

With Detroit facing an immediate $18 billion shortfall, state officials are eager to get out of court as quickly as possible. The Chapter 9 process gives Orr a conceivable fast track, legal experts say, because it does not require allowing outside parties to offer counterproposals on how best to restructure. By contrast, in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, if Detroit did not get its plan approved by a certain deadline, its creditors would have the right to step in and propose an alternate plan, which might include selling off assets.

EVIL DEAD (2013; DVD; Sony Pictures Home Entertainment/Ghost House Productions)

Wow. Did Sam Raimi?s seminal Bruce Campbell gore shlock original really come out circa 1981?and was it really that long ago? In the spirit of tongue-in-cheek but horrifically satisfying projects like Demons and The Beast Within, Raimi?s Evil Dead is often mentioned in the same breath as the other zombie-esque films from the likes of Romero like Dawn and Night, though Evil really has little to do with a zombie plague taking over the world as I see it (many argue these ?possessed? creatures depicted in Raimi?s original and now in Fede Alvarez?s remake are demonic zombies of sorts). Long before Raimi really had his name put on the map for his heralded Spider-Man trilogy, he made shocking-yet-somewhat-humorous horror such as Evil Dead and many fans of his truly believe that?s what launched the filmmaker ? not Spidey. I am not going to waste bandwidth discussing the pro?s and con?s of the phenomenon that has swept through Hollywood over at least the last decade which is remaking everything under the sun ? though in the past I would have rallied for the reasons why it?s been utterly ridiculous to consider doing so and shows a clear lack of originality in the motion picture industry ? but except to say these remakes will continue being churned out, for better or for worse, and we should just get used to it. For what it?s worth, I have found a handful of remakes to actually work ? The Fog, John Carpenter?s The Thing, The Hills Have Eyes, Dawn of the Dead, John Carpenter's Village of the Damned, Friday the 13th, The Haunting, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, House on Haunted Hill ? and a plethora that didn?t ? The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hitcher, Nightmare on Elm Street, Rob Zombie?s Halloween ? and we have recently been treated to a remake of Raimi?s circa ?81 Evil Dead. How does it stack up?

The trailers for this were uber-promising. A group of idiotic kids are (again) somehow trapped inside a remote cabin (similar to Raimi?s film?s plot) a la Eli Roth?s Cabin Fever in the woods where some kind of supernatural force or presence seems to take each of them over, the result of one of these idiots reading from ?The Book of the Dead? that?s discovered there; the hyper-kinetic and downright jarring teasers and trailers for the film showcased a whole lot of excitement and promised gore galore, and I was admittingly immediately hooked. I somewhat recalled Raimi?s original, but I definitely need a refresher on it when I can track it down; but you know something? After watching Alvarez?s remake last night, I can honestly say this was a pretty shocking, over-the-top, blood-drenched horror fest that hasn?t come down the pike in a long, long time; in fact, I can?t recall a horror remake at least being this bloody and special effects-laden since the gory reworking of The Hills Have Eyes. What turned me off about the film the most ? and I said the exact same thing about the remake of Wes Craven?s Hills Have Eyes (which I own on DVD with the special Best Buy ?blood packet? slipcase that?s uber-cool) because of a certain scene in it ? was a sequence involving a dog of one of the characters that is ?affected? by whatever is in the woods and threatening these kids there?my wife and I are avid animal lovers and cannot stand to see mistreatment of them in the scenarios of these films (I realize the actual animals they use in these scenes aren?t really harmed, but I?m just making a point) and we just cannot understand why filmmakers have to inject these scenarios of animals being hurt, killed or injured?I mean, can?t the whole premise just be left out? I hated that sequence in which the Alaskan Huskies are slaughtered by knife in 30 Days of Night and always have to skip over that scene when I watch the Blu-ray; same for the aforementioned Hills Have Eyes in which one of the German Shepherds belonging to the stranded motorists wander off and are eaten brutally by one of the mutated creatures in the mountains. I can?t stand it, and when a similar scene involving a canine arrived in Evil Dead, I immediately went for my Blu-ray player?s remote and fast-forwarded the chapter.

Aside from that, this was a wild, gore-soaked, incredibly taut and tense horror thriller that had everything a film of this genre should have ? there are plenty of over-the-top, turn-your-head-in-disgust body dismemberment sequences in which characters not only lose their limbs but cut some of them off themselves in horrific ways, in addition to demonic possession overtones and lots of graphic, experlative language hurled by the ?possessed? a la Linda Blair?s character in The Exorcist. It was just a crazy horror flick. The story follows Raimi?s original pretty closely, but does away with a lot of the comedic undertone and campy injections that actors such as Bruce Campbell brought to it; in its place is flashy special effects work, shocking body horror and a more modern take on the demonic/occult theme. The opening sequence depicts a girl tied to a post in what appears to be an underground lair of some kind, with some kind of strange ritual being performed around her. Crying and whimpering, the girl begs her father, who enters the scene, to take her home and cut her off the post ? but warnings in another language by an old gypsy woman (Sian Davis) tell of a necessity to burn the girl to ?save her soul.? Reluctantly, the man pours gasoline all over his daughter, still tied to the post, when a possessing demon suddenly shows itself and hurls threats about what is going to happen to the girl?s soul at the father. The man lights her up, and thus begins the premise of this version of Evil Dead ? apparently, this witchcraft ritual of sorts took place in a bunker beneath an old log cabin in the woods someplace, now the property of young Mia (Jane Levy) and David (Shiloh Fernandez), siblings whose mother somehow got sick and died years ago. Ever since, Mia has been suffering with a drug addiction problem, so David and a group of friends take her out to this cabin to perform an intervening session with the hope of ending her problems once and for all. The plan is to keep Mia there no matter what ? even if she starts ?acting up? from withdrawal symptoms, they make a pact to make her stay in the cabin until she slowly comes down off her dependencies.

The group stumbles upon a secret hatch door in the middle of the living room floor of the cabin, soaked in blood and which leads to an underground lair of some kind. An awful stench permeates the air when the hatch is opened ? but which Mia was mysteriously able to smell even before the hatch was opened and which she warned the group of but to no avail as they all thought it was part of her withdrawal ? and the group descends into this strange area. To their shock, they find all sorts of cats and animals burned and hanging upside down from the ceiling (which is actually the floor of the cabin?s living area above) in addition to what appears to be some kind of book wrapped in a strange encasing with thick wire around it. My first thought was this: Haven?t these imbeciles seen enough horror flicks ? or even watched The Mummy, for cryin? out loud ? to know that reading from or otherwise tampering with objects like this is never a good thing? Why couldn?t they just leave well enough alone? There was a reason that this book was wrapped up good and protected with wire, left hidden for no one to really find so easily. But of course, we wouldn?t have a film then, so let me continue with where you know this is headed: One truly moronic and curious type in the group manages to sneak off with this book, opening it with wire cutters to read the contents within. The book ends up being a mix of unknown language printings, depicting biblical plagues and demonic images, and English carvings made in what appears to be human blood with messages warning against reading from it. Of course, the idiot manages to decipher some imbedded code within one of the pages, and this unleashes a supernatural force that first affects Mia ? after having a breakdown of sorts in the cabin during a withdrawal moment, Mia steals the keys to one of the cars the group came up there in and takes off, eventually seeing visions of a blood-covered girl standing in the winding country road before her. She crashes the car into a swamp, and when she attempts to make her way out of the thick brush, she again sees this demonic female figure in the woods. Suddenly attacked by the branches and roots around her, Mia is ?possessed? by some force exuded by the figure which slithers across the ground and makes its way up into her screaming, tortured body.

The group of friends tracks Mia down and brings her back to the cabin, only to find her completely freaked out and paralyzed in fear, babbling about some woman in the woods. From there, Evil Dead goes for broke, as this possessed Mia ends up attacking the friends in her wildly supernatural state, eventually ?passing? the demonic force to each of them. The group eventually manages to lock her in the newly discovered cellar where the rituals apparently took place, where a laughing, grinning demon continues to influence each of the friends in various horrific ways; one of the friends, Olivia (Jessica Lucas), ends up transforming into a frightening demon-thing in the bathroom, where she ends up cutting open her face and ripping apart pieces of her jaw with broken slivers of mirror. She then viciously attacks the next friend that stumbles in, looking for her (the one who originally read from this demonic book ? you almost secretly want him to get his for getting them into this whole debacle) and coming face-to-face with the thing that used to be Olivia.

One by one, the remaining group is influenced by this demonic force taking each of them over, to the point it makes one of the girls, Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore), perform an impromptu amputation of her own arm after the demonic ?infection? from a bite she received crawled up from her wrist to her elbow; what?s worse, the poor terrified girl in the pleated off-white designer dress performs the amputation with what appears to be an electric meat slicer?this was some pretty gory stuff! However, Natalie is not out of the woods yet, as while she has cut the arm off to seemingly stop the ?evil dead? infection, it apparently didn?t quite work as she begins to ?transform? as they all do with strange, demonic eyes and bizarre head and body twitchings. She attacks the two survivors of the group left ? David and the one who read from the book?you know, our hero, who apparently didn?t die from Olivia?s previous attack ? with a nail gun, shooting the pointy objects over and over and over at them until one of them is completely covered in nails and has them jutting out of nearly every surface of his body. David manages to pick up a shotgun and blow Natalie?s other arm off her body, and her armless possessed and bloodied torso makes her way towards David before he blows her completely away. As I said, this was pretty gory, over-the-top horror that hasn?t been seen in quite some time in the genre.

The ending of Evil Dead, as always, gets too convoluted for its own good; it?s suggested that David drags Mia?s body out of the cellar and away from the now-burning cabin and follows a ritual that is supposed to ?reverse? this demonic curse and free the victim?s spirit from the possessing force ? so he digs a hole in the forest, nearby the burning cabin, and places her body in there with a plastic bag around her head?only to hear her begin to beg him not to bury or kill her. Of course, this is the possessing demon just playing a trick on David ? as demons and even Satan will always do to weaken us ? and he continues burying her body before the demon shows itself again and makes random threats about what it?s going to do to Mia?s soul. What confused me at this point is the way in which David digs her body back up and sticks two syringes tied to wires that go to a battery into her chest as a makeshift defibrillator, bringing Mia back to life?what?! First of all, could this really be done?and if it could, wouldn?t this negate the effects of the reverse ritual which gets rid of the demonic force? I suppose it didn?t matter, as the female demonic figure Mia saw earlier reappears, killing David and leaving a now un-possessed Mia to do battle with it. When the creature drops a truck that?s on its side onto Mia?s arm and the poor girl has to rip her own limb off to escape ? and I mean literally rip it off by tugging and tugging and tugging until the whole arm breaks off from the bone and fleshy flaps follow behind it in a rather gruesome dismemberment sequence ? things got a little too silly for me. Mia finishes off this demon creature by driving some kind of weapon into it and slicing it in half, creating a blood-soaked mess that has both screaming ladies absolutely drenched in the red stuff (all the while blood is raining from the sky above), eventually leading to the creature being ?sucked? into the earth below where it?s buried once more.

Now Mia is left with no family, no friends and no arm ? which was a kind of odd, off-putting ending to me; we see the evil book that started all this still intact and ready to be found by another unassuming idiot and read, but I would have preferred if Fede Alvarez gave us some better background on what this whole curse and demonic presence was about?a kind of origin story perhaps in the very beginning. Further, that well-known ?lullaby jingle? that had everyone hooked in the trailers (?Not another peeeep?time to go to SLEEP!?) ? and which was featured in Raimi?s original ? was nowhere to be found in the film, at all. Mia?s character doesn?t pop up from the cellar she?s being held in to render the quirky little line in her possessed state, as the trailers suggested, and I thought this was a bad decision.

VIDEO QUALITY ANALYSIS: HOW DID THE DISC LOOK?

For standard DVD, Sony?s 2.39:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer of Evil Dead looked great in most places. With no indications of heavy noise or compression artifacts and sporting a sharp, clean, detailed look, the feature played in near-Blu-ray quality, even more surprising given the fact that this was a gore-filled horror story. I expected visuals to be a bit twitchy, noisy and relentlessly dark; to the contrary, the transfer exhibited clean visuals with hardly a twitch or flick of video noise anywhere.

Outdoor sequences in the forest and near the cabin were ripe with Blu-ray-like detail and clarity, and one would be hard pressed to guess if this was a standard release or one in high definition without being told; facial close-ups exhibited satisfying levels of fine detail, while black levels didn?t look too crushed or drenched in shadow. Overall, a nice presentation from Sony Pictures.

AUDIO QUALITY ANALYSIS: HOW DID THE DISC SOUND?

The English Dolby Digital 5.1 mix on the Region 1 disc fared, perhaps, a tad bit better than the video ? this was a rousing, bass-heavy, brooding track from beginning to end, really giving the visuals an accompanying layer of sheer terror and suspense. Surround activity was off the charts here, with whooshes, rushes, whipping foley effects and more splattered all over the rear soundstage to play along with the action on screen; likewise for the LFE, which was pounding and wall-rattling during key kill sequences or ?stinger? moments meant to scare the daylights out of the audience. The track carried a satisfying heft and weight to it, with all elements in place that make a great surround experience ? encompassing effects, clear dialogue stems and an in-your-face presence.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I gotta say?if it wasn?t for that aforementioned scene with the dog, this would probably be a buy for me at some point (perhaps for next Halloween season); as it stands, it was a good remake of Sam Raimi?s classic from the 80s, albeit without the great Bruce Campbell (both Raimi and Campbell were involved in this remake project though behind the scenes, Raimi producing along with some others). It definitely isn?t for the squeamish and there are some horrific body transformation/dismemberment sequences on display here that would give The Fly remake a run for its money (I am particularly bothered by this so-called ?body horror? sub genre), but it delivers on being a blood-soaked, modern-day horror flick without the use of ?elements? such as?.ummmm?.casting Paris Hilton (as they did in the awful House of Wax remake).

Definitely worth a rental if you?re up for something scary and jump-inducing; I just don?t know why they continue to insist on showing animals being hurt in all these films. I can?t stand it, personally. It adds nothing to the narrative and simply makes animal lovers uncomfortable?at least that?s how I see it (we couldn?t even sit through the euthanasia sequences of Marley and Me in the theaters without feeling overwhelmed and beaten up with grief and sorrow).

Let me know what you think if you have seen this!

Breeze FM presenters back Marie Curie Cancer Care's Walk Ten event at Badminton

Join Laura James and Tony Wright from the Breeze FM Breakfast show as Marie Curie Cancer Care take over the iconic estate of Badminton for its annual Walk Ten event.

The 10km-walk begins at sunset on Saturday, August 31, through the private deer park and woodland estate which is home to the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort.

The walk will be followed by an after dark picnic and entertainment, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at 10pm, to mark the time Marie Curie nurses, like Catherine LeRoy, begin this night time shift, caring for terminally-ill patients in their own homes.

Catherine said: "It will be a very special evening. It will be fun but there will also be time to reflect on family and friends who are no longer with us.

"I?m sure people will enjoy their walk all the more, knowing it will directly help someone with a terminal illness benefit from our nursing service and remain at home with their loved ones in their last days?.

Walkers will also have to chance of winning over ?1,000-worth of prizes, donated by local companies, including beauty treatments, meals out, activity days and delicious local food hampers.

Under sixteens and dogs walk for free while everyone gets a Walk Ten T-shirt to wear on the night, with all money raised from the event helping to provide more hours of Marie Curie nursing care in your local community.

Spider-Man swoops into Comic-Con in full regalia

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Spider-Man himself made an appearance at Comic-Con, scaling nearby hotels to swoop into a panel in the San Diego Convention Center's largest exhibition hall.

Andrew Garfield, who plays the web-slinging superhero in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its forthcoming sequel, was nowhere in sight. The actor only joined the panel once Spidey left.

Spider-Man told the crowd of nearly 6,000 fans that he loves Comic-Con, adding, "It's the only place where I feel normal."

Garfield, along with Jamie Foxx, director Marc Webb and the film's producers, offered convention-goers the first look at footage from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," which is set for release next year.

Fans were introduced to Foxx's villainous turn as Electro ? a man who starts out admiring Spider-Man, but eventually seeks to destroy him.

6-year-old girl shot in Chicago while at family memorial

Editor's note: Despite previous reports that the 52-year-old woman was the girl's grandmother, police said it is not clear how or if the two are related.

A 6-year-old girl remained in critical condition Saturday after she was seriously wounded in a shooting Friday night while at a vigil with her family in the Roseland neighborhood.

Police sources told NBC Chicago Saturday a person of interest is in custody in connection with the shooting.

It happened at about 7:40 p.m. in the 300 block of West 105th Street, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Quianna Tompkins and at least 40 others were at the home for a memorial for 24-year-old Brandon "Bones" Snipe, who was killed five years ago, when gunfire erupted.

"She ran from the sidewalk up to the grass and she collapsed," said Vanessa Ross. "She just laid there."

Tompkins was shot in the chest and was listed in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A 52-year-old woman was also shot in the leg and listed in serious but stable condition.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from an altercation between two groups of men earlier in the day.

"You have two family members who took a bullet for no reason at all, didn't know anything about what was going on, just because someone had an altercation," community activist Andrew Holmes said.

No one was in custody for the shooting as of Saturday. Police are investigating.

"What's the purpose?" said witness Tasha Moore. "Whoever you want, you go up to them. You don't shoot in no crowd with kids and women."

(AP) ? The Brazilian government says U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has telephoned President Dilma Rousseff in an effort to ease tensions created by the disclosure that the United States collected data on billions of telephone and email conversations in Latin America's biggest nation.

The Brazilian presidency's website says Rousseff and Biden spoke for 25 minutes on Friday night.

After the phone conversation, Communications Minister Helena Chagas told reporters that Biden called Rousseff to offer explanations and to "express his regret over the negative repercussions caused by the disclosures."

Chagas said Rousseff accepted Biden's invitation to send a delegation to Washington to receive "technical and political details" about the case, but the date and makeup of the delegation had not been decided. State-run Agencia Brasil news agency said the group would be comprised of representatives of the foreign, justice and defense ministries and would go to Washington in about three weeks.

Rousseff told Biden she wants the U.S. government to "change its security policies and practices," the communications minister said.

"The president told Biden that the privacy of Brazilian citizens and the country's sovereignty cannot be infringed in the name of security," she said.

The newspaper O Globo reported earlier this month that information released by the National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden showed Brazil is the top target in Latin America for the NSA's intelligence-gathering effort aimed at monitoring communications around the world. The Brazilian government is investigating the disclosures and alleged links between Brazilian and U.S. telecommunications firms with a presence in the country.

NCAA To Stop Putting Name, Logo On EA Video Game

NEW YORK (AP) - Hang on to NCAA Football 14, video game fans. It will be a collector?s edition.

The NCAA said it will no longer allow Electronic Arts Inc. to use its logo starting next year. The move ends a lucrative business deal with the gaming industry giant and comes as the NCAA fights a high-profile lawsuit that says the governing body owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used for free.

The NCAA said it won?t seek a new contract with EA Sports, which manufactures the popular game, beyond the current one that expires in June 2014. However, that won?t stop EA Sports from producing a college football video game depicting powerhouse schools like Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon, and the Redwood City, Calif.-based company made that clear Wednesday.

?EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks,? said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president. ?Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Co. is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, conferences and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports.?

The company reported $3.8 billion in net revenue during its last fiscal year and, aside from its NCAA Football franchise, is well known for Madden NFL, FIFA Soccer and other games.

EA Sports first began making an NCAA Football game in 1998 and it has generated more than $1.3 billion in sales in the U.S. alone, according to a spokesman for market tracking firm The NPD Group Inc. It wasn?t known how much of what EA makes from NCAA Football goes back to the NCAA and its members in licensing deals.

Todd Mitchell, senior analyst with New York-based Brean Capital LLC, said losing the NCAA brand isn?t likely to hurt EA Sports. He estimated NCAA Football accounts for only about 5 percent of EA Sports? revenue, or about $125 million.

?It?s nice to have the brand, but it?s more about the characters,? he said.

Analyst Colin Sebastian of R.W. Baird said EA Sports likely expected to lose its partnership with the NCAA.

?I?m sure they have thought about this because of this pending litigation and the worst case scenarios,? Sebastian said by telephone from San Francisco. ?I don?t expect it to have a significant impact on their business.?

NCAA Football allows participants to play as any major college football team, though unlike in its professional sports games, the names of players are not used. The similarities between the avatars in the game and actual college athletes are at the root of a fight that could alter the way the NCAA does business in the future.

The NCAA is in the midst of a long court battle that started with a lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O?Bannon after he was shown a video game with an avatar playing for the Bruins that played a lot like him.

The antitrust lawsuit also names EA and the Collegiate Licensing Co. that handles trademark licensing for dozens of schools, the NCAA and various conferences. The suit has expanded to include several former athletes who claim the NCAA and EA Sports used their names and likenesses without compensation and demand the NCAA find a way to give players a cut of the billions of dollars earned from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales and video games.

?We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games,? the NCAA said. ?But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.

?The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images or likenesses to EA. The NCAA has no involvement in licenses between EA and former student-athletes,? it said in a statement.

Still, the NCAA said its members can seek arrangements with video game manufacturers if they wish.

?Member colleges and universities license their own trademarks and other intellectual property for the video game,? the NCAA said. ?They will have to independently decide whether to continue those business arrangements in the future.?

Michael Hausfeld, the lead attorney on the O?Bannon case, said the NCAA cutting ties with EA could provide greater freedom for EA to make deals with conferences, schools and even players.

?No longer would EA have to pretend the avatars are not the likenesses of the real players,? he said.

Vice President woos IFAD

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has appealed to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to increase its assistance to rural communities to create other forms of employment to absorb labour released from farming.

He commended the activities of the United Nations Agencies in Ghana, for their support to the economy but also observed that the absence of other more agri-business activities apart from farming had made many a youth swarmed in the cities for non-existent jobs.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur made the appeal when Dr Felix Kanayo Nwanze, the recently re-elected President of the Rome-based organization, led a delegation to call on him at the Flagstaff House, at Kanda, in Accra.

The IFAD President is in Accra to attend the Sixth Africa Agricultural Science Week and the Forum for Agriculture in Africa, which is taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur mentioned among other things the need for guaranteed markets for farmers as an encouragement.

He reiterated Government?s support to farmers for enough productivity and commended the IFAD for teaming up with Government to support a number of projects.

Dr Nwanze gave a plus to Ghana as an important model for IFAD?s progammes and expressed appreciation to the Government and People of Ghana, for giving out a building in Accra to house the IFAD and the Food Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

He said Ghana had been pivotal in translating some of its programmes into reality, adding that the IFAD had 16 projects in Ghana, including rural financing.

Dr Nwanze asked the African political leadership to create the enabling environment for the growth of the small grower, and encourage the development of rural cities with basic social infrastructure like reliable water supply, good roads and electricity.

He said they must also assist the small grower to have markets, in addition to the provision of subsidies for more outputs. Mr Clement Humado, Ghana?s Food and Agricultural Minister, announced that Government had a very high commitment to the development of agriculture, but gradually exiting from subsidies.

Dell buyout vote delay would not lead to higher offer: sources

(Reuters) - Dell Inc Chief Executive Michael Dell and his private equity partner Silver Lake would decline to raise their $24.4 billion bid for the world's No. 3 PC maker even if a vote on their offer is delayed, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Dell may decide to delay a shareholder vote scheduled for Thursday, July 18, on the offer as the company's special board committee now sees the outcome as too close to call, a person familiar with the matter said earlier on Tuesday.

With a nearly 16 percent stake in Dell and ties going back three decades to the creation of the company out of his college dorm room, Michael Dell is seen as having much more at stake in the deal going through than Silver Lake, a financial investor that often walks away from deals it deems to make no sense.

But the two people with knowledge of Michael Dell's and Silver Lake's plans said on Tuesday that any decision to increase the offer would be taken jointly and that both parties have decided there will not be any bump in their $13.65 per share offer.

The people asked not to be identified because their deliberations are private. Spokespeople for Dell and its special board committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Silver Lake declined to comment.

Tesla CTO hopes to reduce EV charging times to 10 minutes or less

Tesla CTO expects to cut EV charging down to 10 minutes or less

Charging time is the bane of every EV driver; even the half-hour for a partial fuel-up at a Tesla Supercharger station can feel like an eternity next to the few minutes required for gasoline. Tesla CTO JB Straubel sees this as just a temporary obstacle, however -- he tells MIT Technology Review that his company could shrink recharge times to between "five to 10 minutes." The primary challenge is optimizing the charger's delivery rates to avoid cooking the battery, he says. While this won't happen overnight, Straubel reminds us that today's Superchargers seemed far-fetched a decade ago. We may not need those battery swapping stations for very long.

China's economy slows for second straight quarter, testing reforms

Ng Han Guan / AP

A Chinese man rides a delivery bike past a propaganda bill board with the words "China, Forward!" in Beijing, China, Monday, July 15, 2013.

China's economic growth in the second quarter of the year may not have slowed as much as some had feared, but a large degree of uncertainty about the outlook for the world's second biggest economy remains, strategists say.

Data on Monday showed the Chinese economy grew 7.5 percent year on year in the June quarter, in line with expectations, but down from 7.7 percent in first three months of the year to mark the second straight quarter of slowing growth.

"Who knows if 7.5 percent [growth] is sustainable? It really is a question of watching the data and where it stabilizes is what's important for the market," Simon Warner, head of macro markets at AMP Capital, told CNBC Asia's "Cash Flow."

(Read More: Just how low will China allow growth to go?)

"We have a real situation in China where nobody really knows where Chinese growth is going to settle down in the coming quarters," he added.

The China gross domestic product (GDP) data bought some relief to markets, which had braced for a weaker-than-forecast number after recent data sparked fears of a sharp slowdown in growth.

Asian stock markets were a touch firmer after the GDP release, while the China-data sensitive Australian dollar hit a session high of about $0.9109.

(Read More: Why aren't markets rallying over China's GDP?)

In a statement, the China statistics bureau said economic performance in the first half was stable, with economic indicators within a reasonable range.

New Premier Li Keqiang has been prominent in pushing for economic reform over fast-line growth, suggesting the government is in no rush to offer fresh stimulus to revive an economy in a protracted slowdown.

With the latest GDP data, China's growth has slowed down in nine of the last 10 quarters.

The government's official growth target for 2013 is 7.5 percent, impressive by world standards but it would be the slowest pace in 23 years for China.

The main worry for China's leaders is if the economic slowdown leads to high unemployment that could spark social unrest. So far government officials say employment is stable.

So for now, economists do not see any major stimulus or policy shift and instead expect the government to tough out the slowdown as they pursue a longer-term vision of reforming the economy towards consumer-led, rather than export- and investment-led growth.

(Read More: Why China delivered such a big miss in trade data)

China's full-year growth was 7.8 percent in 2012 and the government targets growth of 7.5 percent for 2013, which would be the slowest in 23 years, according to Reuters.

Analysts at Nomura said that while they maintained their 2013 GDP forecast of 7.5 percent, they had lowered their 2014 forecast to 6.9 percent from 7.5 percent after Monday's GDP report ? partly on an expectation that China's government would lower its official growth forecast for next year.

"In the U.S. we can't predict what's going to happen in three months' time and here we have folks saying growth will be 7.5 percent," said Bill Smead, CEO at Smead Capital Management. "And that's fantastic but I'd like to take them [policymakers] into some other arena so I could make some money out of their ability to predict things so exactly."

Last week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted slowing Chinese growth as one of the three main threats to global economic growth.
